What immersive virtual reality cannot do.

Virtual reality acts on your experiences, memory, sight and sound. It does not act on touch, taste or smell. With virtual reality you can visit Paris, the Seine and the Champ de Mars; you can climb to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower and sit at a table in the Jule Verne restaurant; you can even meet chef Alain Ducasse, but you cannot taste his delicacies.

Edwin Abbott Abbott, Flatland. A Romance of Many Dimensions, 1882

YOU, WHO are blessed with shade as well as light, you,
who are gifted with two eyes,
endowed with a knowledge of perspective,
and charmed with the enjoyment of various colours,
you, who can actually see an angle,
and contemplate the complete circumference of a Circle
in the happy region of the Three Dimensions
– how shall I make clear to you the extreme difficulty
which we in Flatland experience in recognizing
one another’s configuration?
